About Us

A little bit about us...

Adventure Tours Australia Group have been around for over 20 years. We specialise in small group tours that are designed to provide unforgettable and authentic Aussie and New Zealand experiences. From outback to coast experiencing Aboriginal culture, camping under the desert stars, enjoying the remote 4WD adventures and soaking up the mountain vistas of New Zealand, we are the real deal.

We offer 3 types of tour styles tailored for each travellers sense of adventure, travel style and budget. We can also offer private tours or group charters on request.

Our History

Starting from mere roots in Australia's outback touring visitors through the Red Centre we have grown our footprint nationally and even crossed the water to New Zealand. Established in 1992, Adventure Tours has grown in size, with a constant focus on delivering small group tours with big adventures. In 2008 we added New Zealand to our portfolio with tours commencing in late 2008. Since then we've continued to grow joining forces with best in class tour partners to strengthen our ability to deliver genuine experiences.

Why choose Adventure Tours

We Rock!

We introduce you to future friends from around the globe and provide a genuine Aussie experience that can't be matched by driving the highways or riding regular public transport, here's why...

We've been around for over 20 years

Our wealth of experience and expertly trained guides will make your time with us memorable.

We've got the best guides in the business

Our guides undertake a comprehensive training programme, featuring first aid, driver training, mechanical operations, bushcraft, geology, botany, history, cooking skills, national parks and Aboriginal culture.

What's more, our guides are fun, driven and passionate people who love sharing their favourite Australian spots with travellers like you every day!

We offer three unique tour styles

Choose from Unleashed, Explorer or Safari, to match your travel style, sense of adventure and budget! Our tours are also designed for different group sizes and fitness levels, giving you even more freedom to choose.

Our prices include all the extras

Like national park fees, most meals and the best activities around. Plus, we give you time wherever possible to take on optional extras like helicopter rides, bungy jumping and swimming with whale sharks, to name just a few.

You get a real Aussie experience

Experience remote 4WD adventures in the outback, visit famous Aussie watering holes, camp under the desert stars and explore Aboriginal culture experiences. Our tours are designed to reward you with that unique taste of Australia.

Our tours educate

As well as being fun and informative, our tours introduce you to the wonders of Aboriginal culture, flora, fauna, geology, botany and the history of our continent.

We use exclusive accommodation

Some of our favourite accommodation spots include sheep and cattle stations, wilderness lodges, beach houses and an underground bunkhouse in Coober Pedy. You may also get the chance to sleep in a swag (Aussie bedroll) under the outback stars, or in modern safari style tents; it all depends on your chosen tour style.

We care about the environment

We believe in sustainable tourism and are active in taking initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint. We are a Climate Action Certified tourism business and plan to keep it that way. We use the eight principles of Eco Certification in selecting and maintaining campsites, our transport fleet and equipment on tour. Also, our guides are trained in all aspects of eco friendliness including waste management, use of resources and emissions.

We've got shiny awards

Including the Golden Backpack Award for Best Australian Operator 2011, voted by backpackers worldwide, as well as the 2008 Australian Export Award!

Our Tour Guides

Adventure Tours guides are not your average tour guide!

Our guides are not only a source of valuable information about the geology, botany and Aboriginal culture of their region, but they are also the mechanic, the cook and the entertainer.

Our Tour Guides

Adventure Tours Australia guides are not your average tour guide! They are not only a source of valuable information about the geology, botany and Aboriginal culture of their region, but they are also the mechanic, the cook and the entertainer.

All guides complete our comprehensive in-house training program, which incorporates food preparation skills, mechanical and driver training, customer relations, a St John's First Aid Course and an accredited certificate from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). This ensures that our guides are professional and in possession of vast and accurate information and skills to conduct a quality, safe and fun tour! Few companies can boast such an intensive and complete training program.

Training outstanding guides

A good tour guide can make or break your holiday, which is why Adventure Tours Australia makes sure our guides are not just good, but exceptional.

Not only are our guides fun, driven and passionate people who love sharing their favourite Australian spots with travellers like you every day, they are skilled cooks, entertainers and drivers and possess a wealth of knowledge to provide insightful commentary about the geology, history and culture of their region.

Before they take their first tour on the road, Adventure Tours guides must complete a thorough in-house training programme, giving them the ability to conduct a quality, safe and fun tour and ensuring our travellers always experience the best of what Australia has to offer.

The comprehensive 16 day guide training programme features theoretical and practical on the road training. This covers first aid, bushcraft, geology, botany, history, cooking, food handling and catering skills, and knowledge of national parks and Aboriginal culture. They are also skilled on leadership, communication, group dynamics, presentation delivery and research skills.

As part of their qualification, guides undertake a St John's First Aid certification and an accredited certificate from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), covering Aboriginal culture and regional geology, and also complete the highly regarded Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Tour Guide Accreditation through Charles Darwin University.

"Few companies can match the intensive and complete training program we offer", David Thompson, Group Sales Manager said.

"As Adventure Tours takes travellers to some of the most beautiful but isolated destinations in Australia and New Zealand, it's essential that our guides have all the skills to deal with anything that comes up, whether it's a query about the landscape or local culture to a serious emergency. The safety and well being of our passengers is taken very seriously and something we pride ourselves on as a company."

"Not only are our guides hand picked for their skills and talent, but for their fantastic people skills. They know how to ensure everyone has fun on their tour and gets to know their fellow passengers. In the end, it's all about improving the passenger experience".

After the guides have completed the comprehensive training programme, they then undertake an on the road traineeship with a senior guide. During this time they further develop their skills, knowledge and confidence as an assistant guide on up to five tours, enabling them to hit the ground running when it comes time to conducting their first solo tour.

Due to the outstanding talent of our thoroughly trained guides, they are more than often the first to be highlighted by happy Adventure Tours passengers in our online tour reviews.

Here are just a few mentions you can read from happy passengers, or jump on one of our tours and see for yourself how our guides can make your adventure exceptional.

"Tour guides Nathan (Kakadu) & Duffy (Alice - Adelaide) made every day better than the last. Friendly, helpful and they gave that little bit extra to make it unforgettable."

"Matt is an excellent guide. He is knowledgeable, patient, funny and a great singer and cook."

"Our field guide (Luke) totally made our trip with his knowledge of the culture, the geology and the history of the area."

"Went with my parents and sister on the 3 Day Uluru Safari and we all had a wonderful time, the guide had a lot of knowledge and obviously loved her job."

"Duffy's organisation was exemplary. He had games, quizzes, 'getting to know you' introductions, drawing competitions etc perfectly timed during the long bus trips. All supplies for such activities seamlessly appeared from his box of tricks as if by magic. His routines for cooking, cleaning and packing up camp were organised with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of fun."

"Our guide knew how to 'read' the group extremely well. He knew how to get the shy to speak up, how to reach out to those who were struggling and how to have a good laugh with the more gregarious of the group. He made you feel part of a team."

"Our guide's strict adherence to occupational health and safety concerns gave me the utmost confidence in both him and your organization. He made sure people were drinking enough water and paying attention to their surroundings in a fun and informative way."

Please note that different cancellation conditions may apply to some Day Tours and Short Break Adventures - please ask us.

7. Prices & Surcharges

Our trip prices are based on currency exchange rates published by OANDA in August 2012. We reserve the right to impose surcharges up to 28 days before departure due to unfavourable changes in exchange rates, increases in airfares or other transportation costs, increases in local operator costs, taxes, or if government action should require us to do so. 8. Minimum Numbers & Combination Trips

Some of our tours require minimum numbers to guarantee their departure. If you would like to know how many people are booked on your trip or any combination trip it is part of please ask prior to making your booking. Many of our trips are designed to fit with other departures to create a longer "combination" trip; this means that some of your group may have already been travelling together for some weeks when you commence your trip.

9. Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance is compulsory for all Adventure Tours travellers and should be taken out at the time of booking. Your Travel Insurance must provide cover against personal accident, death, medical expenses and emergency repatriation with a recommended minimum coverage of US$200,000 for each of the categories of cover. You must provide proof of your Travel Insurance on the first day of your trip. However it is also recognised that in some countries (eg. Germany and Austria) local consumer laws do not permit the compulsory purchase of Travel Insurance. Clients from these exempt countries who choose to travel without holding an adequate and valid Travel Insurance policy will be asked to complete an Insurance Waiver form before commencement of their tour. Australians are not required to be covered for medical expenses on trips within Australia. However we strongly recommend that you have a domestic Travel Insurance policy which covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects.

10. Age Requirements

For the majority of our trips the minimum age for children is 8. All travellers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is responsible for the child's day to day care. Please note; families must upgrade from dorm-share accommodation to private rooms. On camping trips, accompanying adults may be required to share with others in the group on a twin share basis. Variations: a lower minimum age may apply on Short Break and Day Tours. Please be aware of our specially designed Unleashed 18-39 tours.

Many of our trips are designed to fit with other departures to create a longer "combination" trip; this means that some of your group may have already been travelling together for some days when you commence your trip. If you would like to know how many people are booked on your trip or any combination trip it is part of please ask prior to making your booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to reconfirm my tour?

Yes! Adventure Tours Australia and New Zealand advise confirming your tour 48 hours prior to departure with your name and booking number to avoid any disappointment.  Please call us on 1300 654 604 (within Australia) or +61 3 8102 7800 (International).  Always check your pre-departure information ensure your pick up place and time are correct and confirmed.

What to bring

Each tour requires all the basics you would typically bring on any trip e.g. toiletries, towels, camera and extra money for optional snacks and activities. Due to the nature of our tours we recommend bringing sturdy walking shoes (preferably ankle high), swimming gear, hat, sunscreen, water bottle, torch, insect repellent, fly net to cover your head if you are bothered by flies (outback tours particularly) and motion sickness tablets (recommended on NZ and boat tours).  On any of our Unleashed and Explorer tours you will be required to bring a pillow and sleeping bag (this can be purchased for AUD $30 on Northern Territory Tours and for tours in Western Australia hire option for AUD $30 or purchased for AUD $50; not necessary for fully accommodated tours i.e. Tasmania).  Clothing requirements vary dependent on location and seasonality (e.g. warm clothing, waterproof jackets), please ask when booking or email us with your confirmed booking number reservations@adventuretours.com.au.

How much luggage can I bring?

Our vehicles have limited space so please keep your luggage to a MAXIMUM OF 15 KGS (except KAKADU tours which are MAXIMUM 10KGS) in a backpack or soft overnight bag with a small day pack for easy access to camera, sun block etc. It is recommended to plan ahead and arrange to store bulky items at pre-tour accommodation. This is relevant also, when travelling on packages which include Kakadu, as all tours start from and return to Darwin. Any package touring totally within the Northern Territory which includes the Red Centre will start from and return to Alice Springs. It may be necessary to freight excess luggage at passenger's expense.

Where do I meet the tour?

Please refer to the itinerary for your specific tour or speak to our Reservations Team for more information.

What are local payments?

A local payment is an amount of money paid in local currency (eg, Australian or New Zealand dollars) on the first day of your tour. It is used to pay for activities and fees that need to be paid directly to a service provider on the day of services. These include national park entry fees, equipment hire and environmental management fees. All the prices on our website include local payments, where relevant.

Do I have to participate?

Part of the enjoyment of our tours is bonding with a group of likeminded adventurers, so we make them active and hands on. With the exception of our Safari in Style tour, passengers are expected to help prepare food, wash dishes and generally assist the guide as directed. How fit do I have to be?Our tours are active and require a reasonable level of fitness. Please refer to our fitness guide. If you enjoy hiking through gorges, swimming in waterfalls and directly experiencing the environment, then our tours are perfect for you. If you have any doubts about your suitability for our tours, please check with our Reservations Department before making a booking. We reserve the right to assess your ability to participate at check-in.

What do I eat?

Our emphasis is on fresh food wherever possible and our meals are nutritious and varied. If you are vegetarian or gluten intolerant we can cater for you, but if you have very specific dietary needs you may need to provide your own food, so please discuss this at time of booking. For breakfast we supply cereals, toast, tea and coffee. Lunch is usually a self-serve sandwich and salads; in the evening we have a cooked dinner. Some tours, such as Safari in Style, have a focus on 'bush tucker', giving you the chance to experience this uniquely Australian cuisine (refer to your itinerary for details). We always carry water in the vehicle and you will often have the chance to buy your own drinks, ice-creams etc at stops.

How much water do I need to drink?

Doctors advise that 2-3 litres (10-12 glasses) of water per day is essential when travelling in Australia. All our vehicles carry adequate water supplies. Weather conditions in summer can be very warm - hiking requires an intake of 1.5 litres of water per hour. Our guides are trained professionals and it is very important that their advice is adhered to.

What type of accommodation will I get?

Depending on the tour/s you've booked, you could use a range of accommodation styles from basic bush camping, dorm, hostel and shared backpacker facilities to farm stays, hotels, B&Bs and even sailboats. We also have our own campsites, with great facilities, which we use whenever possible. For specific information relating to your tour, visit our accommodation page.

What vehicles do you have?

Please see the vehicle symbol on your chosen tour page to determine what vehicle you are likely to be travelling in. Our vehicle types include a 21 and a 24 seater mini-bus, as well as 4WD trucks which seat between 16 and 27 passengers. Please note that vehicle types are an indication only and some tours may use a combination of vehicles types. Vehicle types are subject to change at any time, and tour partner vehicle types may vary from what is displayed. For specific information relating to your tour, visit the vehicle page.

What's the climate like?

Australia is a large country with weather conditions varying considerably from one region to another. Generally, you can expect high temperatures in the summer (Dec-Feb), often extending into autumn, with lower temperatures at night and during winter (Jun-Aug), particularly in southern Australia where conditions can change quickly. The top half of Australia, particularly the Northern Territory, is known for its 'wet' (Oct-Mar) and 'dry' (Apr-Sept) seasons. New Zealand has a sub-tropical to temperate climate but be prepared for lower temperatures during winter (Jun-Aug) and we recommend you bring a good wind and/or waterproof jacket, as well as warm clothing, year-round. Further weather information can be found at: www.bom.gov.au (AUS), www.metservice.co.nz (NZ).

Can I smoke and drink on the vehicle?

No. Australian government regulations prohibit smoking and the drinking of alcohol inside tourist vehicles in Australia (smoking and drinking should be limited to stops along the route).

Interview with a Guide

"TK" – Scott Russell - Tour Guide based in Darwin

What made you decide to become a tour guide?

I always wanted to see my country, and love working in the outdoors. Originally I was working full time as a tree surgeon, I was very happy doing that job but I broke my wrist and was unable to continue climbing trees. Looking through the internet one day for a new job I stumbled across an article about touring in Central Australia and the Top End. Sounded fun.

Why the Northern Territory?

I originally started in Alice Springs. I think I was attracted to the remoteness of the place. It was quite appealing to me to pack up and move to a place so different for where I had lived my entire life, in Sydney. The whole sleeping under the stars in the Outback just did it for me.

What kinds of training/experience do you have?

I studied Botany for three years at uni to be an Arborist so that gave me a good background with the Flora to be seen out there. Then after I was hired I went through a training course. That lasted for about 1.5 months during which we spent time with National Park rangers, anthropologists, and senior tour guides to teach us the finer details of the job.

In an average week, what does your schedule look like?

It varies quite a bit from week to week.In our busy season here, from May to October, I can be working up to 6 days a week. This is when all the tourists arrive and the weather is very comfortable. In the quieter season I'll be working 3 or 4 days a week. This is great as I can rest up after working hard during the busy times, and I can even fit in time to do fishing in-between my tours!

What do you enjoy the most, and the least, about your job?

The best parts of the job would have to be meeting so many people from so many different places and cultures and getting to show them this beautiful country. I learn as much from passengers as I hope they do from me. I don't really have a least favorite part though I really don't like doing any paperwork.

What are some common misconceptions people have about Australia?

The pure size of the country would have to be number one – it is so much bigger then most people can grasp until they visit. Then there's that whole thing that the snakes and spiders are everywhere and will go out of their way to get you!

Where are you from originally?

Born in Sydney and lived there until I moved to Alice Springs for this job. These days I live in Darwin though, been here over four years now.
